New Harmony was organized on November 22, 1879. The plot of land on which it stands was given by John C. DuRant, Sr. to the following trustees: D. W. DuRant, S. E. Ingram, Robert Witherspoon, and William Burgess Plowden. The title of the property was vested in the Session of the Church and continues as such this day.
New Harmony received its name because of its proximity to the site of the Harmony Church of former days. Drawing members from Concord, Salem, Black River, Brewington, Manning and Midway, our members felt that the necessities of the time demanded a new church.
The church continued through good times and bad as a member of the Presbyterian Church in the United States until 1975. In 1975, New Harmony left this body and became a member of the Presbyterian Church in America. New Harmony was one of the first congregations in the Southeast to remove itself from the PCUS.
The church has met since 1879 in the original building on New Harmony Church Road in Alcolu, SC. In 2001, the church began meeting in its new building across the street from the original location. The original building is still used for church activities.
New Harmony has grown in membership from the original twenty to now over a hundred, with six elders and eight deacons. Since the founding of the church in 1879, the church has had 16 pastors and eleven supply pastors. New Harmony is now enjoying the godly leadership of our current pastor, Rev. Bill Barton.
